Dewan Eja Pro, the proofing and reference software for Malay language developed by The Name Technology Sdn. Bhd. (tnt) is being deployed in school computer labs nationwide.  Dewan Eja Pro is one of the specified software products in the project by the Ministry of Education to build computer labs in schools throughout Malaysia.

Dewan Eja Pro features the Malay spell checker and dictionaries co-developed with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.  It helps users to use correct Malay language when writing, and enables easy referencing by students and teachers.  tnt believes the wide deployment of Dewan Eja Pro would benefit the education sector, and is excited to be given such an opportunity to contribute.

During the software deployment, which is still in progress, the tnt team visited some of the schools to install software.  Mr. Chiew Ruoh Tau, the Chief Technology Officer of tnt, had performed field work himself in rural schools.

“It is eye-opening,” says Tau.  “I went to this rural school that’s essentially non-accessible by my car because of a surrounding river.  I had to wait for the principal, En. Aziz, and the waiting itself was a scary experience because cellular phone coverage was minimal.  En. Aziz came in a motorbike to take me across a  narrow bridge.”

“And there I was.  In a place so inaccessible, I saw a small but magnificent computer lab, recently built, standing proudly by the school.”

Mr. Chiew Ruoh Peng, the Executive Director, thought he had an even more compelling story to tell, “There was this school, mainly for Orang Asli, that essentially nested in the jungle. There was no proper road.  You could only reach there with a 4-Wheel-Drive.  It’s just trees around you, and you had to have faith in the map and compass, maybe GPS too.  Sure enough, a school eventually emerged with a computer lab, powered by generator set.  And yes, they are having Internet access!”

The duo said they felt proud as Malaysians to see how far-reaching our I.T. infrastructure is among schools.  All labs are equipped with new PCs powered by uninterruptible power supply.  Each lab has a air-conditioned server room.  Teaching aids like projectors and screens are also ready.  Rural schools actually enjoy no less attention than urban ones, despite certain misconception by the public.

The entire phase of the project targets to end by year 2010.

tnt is particularly proud that increasingly more people get to use their software product.   Its success had spawned imitators.  tnt reiterates that it is the sole licensee of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka contents for develop software proofing tools.  To ensure Malaysian consumers have access to the best, tnt is offering competitive upgrade to customers who have purchased similar software products before.  Interested parties may contact the tnt sales team.
